In glassblowing, moil is the unwanted glob of glass that clings to the end of your blowpipe or punty after you have shaped and removed a finished piece. When you knock off a blown vessel or detach it from the punty with a tap, some glass always remains fused to the iron rod. This residual mass is the moil.
The moil serves a practical purpose in the working rhythm of glassblowing. Rather than clean the pipe back to bare iron every time, most makers simply reheat the moil in the glory hole and use it as the starting point for the next gather. The experienced glassblower reads the moil like a fuel gauge: if it grows too large, it gets cleared; if it shrinks too much, a fresh gather is needed. A moil that has been reheated multiple times accumulates air bubbles and can spoil the clarity of the next piece, so batch composition and repeated thermal cycling do matter.
The term likely derives from the French word moille, meaning soft or wet. Early English glassmaking texts from the 17th century refer to this soft, shapeless residue by this name. The moil is indeed soft and plastic when hot, and it remains stuck through surface adhesion rather than any mechanical bond.
Different workshops manage moil differently. Some glassblowers prefer to work with fresh gathers each time and knock off the moil into a cullet bin for remelting. Others, particularly in production or ornamental work, plan for moil reuse as part of the thermal efficiency of the session. The size and character of the moil also depends on the original piece shape, the detaching technique, and how quickly the rod cools after separation.
In punty work (the gathering of glass on a solid iron rod rather than a hollow pipe), the moil at the base of a gathered mass is the thick pool of glass closest to the iron. This lower moil often shows grain structure or subtle color variation because it may have cooled slightly during the work. Glassmakers must account for this when planning where to make their final cut or break, since moil glass typically cannot be incorporated cleanly into the next piece.
