monolithologic: a deposit made from just one rock type
A monolithologic deposit consists entirely of a single rock type, with no significant interbedding or mixing of different lithologies. In mining and quarrying operations, this uniformity matters enormously because it means the orebody maintains consistent physical and chemical properties from the surface to depth. Granite quarries, for instance, are often monolithologic; the entire pit may work the same crystalline granite for decades without encountering andesite, schist, or softer interlayers that would require different extraction methods.
The term appears most frequently in hard rock mining and dimension stone extraction, where homogeneity directly affects drilling speed, blast fragmentation, and product quality. A monolithologic kimberlite pipe, by contrast to a heterolithic one, simplifies grade control and processing because the gangue minerals remain predictable. Conversely, a polygenetic iron deposit with alternating bands of hematite and silicate host rock presents a more complex mining problem, even if total metal content is the same.
Geological formation and economic implications
Monolithologic bodies form through processes that produce large volumes of uniform magma, sediment, or metamorphic rock without interruption. A thick sill of dolerite, an extensive sandstone formation, or a large pegmatite can all be monolithologic. The economic advantage lies in predictability: mine planning, mill design, and equipment selection can all be optimized for one material type, reducing changeover costs and operational risk.
The word combines the Greek monos (single) and lithos (stone), with the suffix -logic referring to composition or character. It is the inverse of polygenetic or heterolithic deposits, which contain multiple rock types. Geologists drilling exploration holes use stratigraphic logs to identify whether a target is monolithologic or whether it contains transitions and admixtures that will complicate mining economics.
