Unlike rotary drills, which cut through material by spinning, a gadder works by striking repeated blows against a hardened bit, fracturing the rock incrementally. The tool is driven either by compressed air (pneumatic) or by hand, making it portable enough for prospectors and field crews to move between sampling locations.
Pneumatic gadders operate at 80 to 100 strokes per minute, powered by compressors mounted on mobile rigs or towed compressor units. The striking action transfers energy directly to the drill bit, which is typically a tungsten carbide or steel chisel point. Depths reached are modest, commonly 10 to 50 meters, sufficient to collect geological samples and test ore grade without the setup overhead of larger rotary equipment. Manual gadders, rarer now, relied on operator strength and repetitive striking and were used where compressed air was unavailable or for very shallow, trial boring.
Variants and Application
Variants include the hand auger (purely manual, for soft ground), the churn drill (older percussion design with cable suspension), and the portable jackhammer drill (modern electric or pneumatic version adapted for exploration). Mining companies deploy gadders during initial prospecting phases to determine if a site warrants investment in core drilling rigs. The tool excels in remote locations and in scattered, exploratory grids where a small drill footprint matters. Failures are typically mechanical: bit dulling (requiring resharpening or replacement after a few holes), seal wear in pneumatic piston mechanisms, and compressor supply issues in rugged terrain.
The term derives from the hammering action and the resemblance to a medieval gad, a pointed tool. Gadders sit between simple augers and full-scale rotary core rigs in the exploration toolkit, valued for speed, cost, and mobility rather than depth or precision. They remain standard in alluvial diamond prospecting, coal seam testing, and metallic mineral surveys where initial sample collection must be fast and flexible.
