A moonroof is a transparent or tinted glass panel installed in the roof of a vehicle, positioned to allow daylight into the cabin even when the roof itself is fully closed. Unlike a traditional opaque sunroof, which blocks light when shut, a moonroof remains optically open. The panel typically slides rearward into a recess within the roof structure, or tilts upward at the front edge. Most modern moonroofs use laminated safety glass tinted to reduce solar heat gain and ultraviolet radiation.

The term emerged in automotive marketing during the 1980s to distinguish this feature from the pop-up or fully removable sunroofs common on earlier vehicles. Manufacturers used "moonroof" to emphasize the aesthetic and psychological benefit of overhead light without requiring the owner to remove or operate anything. Today the term is used somewhat loosely across the industry, and the distinction between "moonroof" and "sunroof" has blurred; many cars described as having a moonroof are fully venting panels, not merely transparent fixed glass.

Construction and Variants

A typical moonroof assembly includes the glass panel itself, a frame or carrier rail system, weatherstripping, and a motor-driven actuator. Tilting moonroofs pivot at the front edge, creating a gap at the rear for ventilation when cracked open. Sliding models travel along tracks, retracting into the roof cavity. Panoramic moonroofs span a larger area of the roof, sometimes extending from the front to the rear seat, and may incorporate a center divider or shade. The glass is usually 4 to 5 millimeters thick for structural safety and thermal insulation.

Installation adds complexity to roof panel manufacturing. The structural integrity of the roof must be maintained despite the large opening, requiring reinforcement ribs and careful welding around the aperture. Weatherproofing is critical: failing seals allow water to enter the roof cavity and drip into the cabin or headliner. Drain channels are integrated into the frame to route incidental water to exit points near the vehicle frame rails.

Moonroofs are now offered across vehicle classes, from compact hatchbacks to luxury sedans and SUVs. They add cost, weight, and minor aerodynamic drag. In hot climates, solar heat through the glass can increase cabin temperature and air-conditioning load. Tinted or electrochromic (smart glass) variants address this, though they command higher prices. Mechanical and electrical failures, including motor malfunction, stuck panels, and seal degradation, are common warranty claims in the years following purchase.
