A moot is a simple metal ring, typically steel, sized to check whether wooden dowels or pins fall within acceptable diameter limits. The ring functions as a go/no-go gauge: a pin that slides freely through the moot is undersized; one that binds or cannot enter is oversized. The moot's interior diameter sets the maximum permissible size for a wooden pin of a given specification.
Moots are commonly made from hardened steel and range from roughly 0.25 inches to 2 inches in internal diameter, depending on the pin sizes being inspected. They are often supplied in sets that cover the standard wooden pin dimensions used in furniture, cooperage, and joinery work. The ring itself is usually flat or slightly beveled at the entry edge to guide the pin smoothly during inspection. Unlike plug gauges or caliper-based systems, the moot requires no adjustment and cannot drift out of tolerance through wear or recalibration errors.
The name "moot" derives from Old English and relates to the idea of a meeting place or assembly point. In this context it refers to a point of measurement or check: the wooden pin must "meet" the moot's standard. The term is primarily British and remains in use in traditional woodworking and cooperage, though it is less common in modern manufacturing where digital calipers and automated vision systems have taken over much pin inspection work.
Wooden pins are still used in traditional joinery, chair construction, and barrel assembly, making moots relevant in heritage crafts and small-batch production. The simplicity and low cost of a moot make it practical for on-the-floor spot checks where speed matters more than high precision. A worker can gauge dozens of pins per minute by hand without electricity or setup time.
Wear on the interior surface of a moot can gradually enlarge it, causing false accepts of oversize pins. Regular calibration against a master pin or micrometer reading is necessary to catch this drift. A worn moot should be retired rather than reconditioned, as the cost of repair typically exceeds replacement.
