Plaid is a twilled woollen cloth distinguished by a crisscross pattern of coloured stripes or checks. The weave itself, a twill construction with the warp and weft passing over and under two threads alternately, creates the characteristic diagonal ridge that defines the cloth's surface texture and gives it body and resilience. The pattern emerges from the arrangement of dyed yarns in the warp and weft before weaving begins, meaning the colour pattern is structural rather than printed or applied afterward.
In the broadest industrial sense, any tartan or checked woollen fabric can be called plaid, though the term is often reserved for the heavier, more durable versions used in suiting and outerwear. Weight typically ranges from 12 to 16 ounces per yard for dress plaids to 18 ounces or more for overcoating grades. The twill weave naturally sheds water better than plain weave fabrics of similar weight, making plaid particularly useful for weatherproof applications.
The pattern nomenclature derives from Gaelic traditions, particularly Scottish tartans, each of which traditionally belonged to a clan or region. In modern manufacturing, plaid patterns are classified by the sett, the repeat unit of the pattern measured in thread count. A tight sett with many threads per inch produces a dense, fine check; a loose sett creates a bold, open pattern. The same sett repeated in different colours and yarn types yields dramatically different commercial products.
Manufacture and defects
Plaid cloth is produced on power looms equipped to manage multi-colour threading. The chief manufacturing challenge is keeping tension even across the full width of the cloth, since the pattern requires precise alignment of warp threads in specific colour sequences. Weaving defects include slubs (thick places in the yarn), picked-out stitches that disrupt the pattern, and uneven selvedge tension that causes wavy edges. Finishing involves fulling to consolidate the weave, shearing to raise and cut the nap, and pressing to set the fold and pattern crisply.
Plaid entered industrial production at scale during the 19th century as Scottish mills mechanised tartan weaving for export markets. The fabric remains associated with formal and semi-formal menswear, particularly suiting and shirts, though contemporary plaid production is dominated by cotton blends and synthetics rather than pure wool. The twill structure itself persists across these material substitutions because it imparts the combination of durability, appearance, and drape that makes the fabric commercially successful across climate zones and end uses.
