A mouse bungee is a weighted or spring-mounted arm that clamps to the edge of a desk and suspends a computer mouse cable above the work surface. The cable runs through a guide or along the arm, held at tension so it does not drag across the desk, catch on objects, or tangle around itself. This keeps the cable out of the operator's way while maintaining enough slack for full mouse movement across the pad.

The device typically consists of a heavy base or clamp, a vertical or articulated arm, and a cable guide or sheath. Some designs use a coiled spring; others rely on gravity and adjustable friction. The guide often incorporates a small rubber or nylon collar that lets the cable slide smoothly while preventing it from bunching. Quality matters: a poorly balanced arm will either go slack or pull the mouse across the pad with unwanted resistance.

Why it matters in precision work

In CAD stations, graphic design suites, and electronics assembly areas, cable drag introduces micro-movements that degrade pointer accuracy and cause fatigue during long sessions. A bungee reduces this drag to nearly zero and keeps the cable path predictable. Without one, operators often wrap cables around monitors or tape them down, both of which restrict movement and create hazards.

The name comes from the bungee cord, which also suspends objects under tension. Mouse bungees are sometimes called cable suspenders or mouse cable managers. They are distinct from mousepad cable channels, which guide the cable horizontally, and from coiled cable retractors, which wind unused cable into a spring-loaded spool. The bungee is standard in esports and professional gaming setups, where consistency of mouse feel is critical, but is equally useful in any role requiring hours of precision pointing.
