CD drive
An optical drive used for reading data from and possibly writing data on a compact disc.
CD drive: the laser reader that made data portable
A CD drive is an optical drive that uses a focused laser beam to read pits and lands encoded on a compact disc, translating them into digital data that a computer can process. The drive spins the disc at varying speeds (typically 200 to 500 RPM for audio, up to 52x speed for data) while a servo-controlled laser reads the spiral track from the center outward. Most drives manufactured after 1995 also write to recordable media (CD-R) and rewritable media (CD-RW), though read-only models remain common in industrial settings.
CD drives come in several configurations. Internal drives mount in a 5.25-inch or 3.5-inch bay and connect via ATAPI or SCSI to the host system. External drives use USB or FireWire connections and are common for archival work and portable operations. Jukebox systems, which stack dozens of discs on a carousel, use specialized drives in a single chassis to serve network queries without human intervention. These were standard in enterprise data centers before DVD and network storage became dominant.
Read versus write capability
Read-only drives (often marked CD-ROM) detect reflected laser light returning from the disc surface with high sensitivity. Recordable drives add a write laser at higher power (15 to 50 milliwatts) that heats a dye layer or phase-change material on blank media to create permanent pits. Rewritable drives use a phase-change layer that can be erased and rewritten up to 1,000 cycles. Write speed asymmetry is common: a drive rated 52x/32x/52x reads at 52x but writes to CD-R at 32x and to CD-RW at 52x.
Degradation occurs predictably. The laser diode dims over time, reducing read reliability after 5,000 to 10,000 operating hours. Media failure accelerates at elevated temperature and humidity; CD-R discs with poor dye formulations fail within 10 to 20 years even in controlled storage. Mechanical wear in the spindle motor and servo mechanism leads to seek errors and dropped frames. Industrial systems that run continuously must plan for replacement before mean time to failure (MTTF) is reached.
The CD drive was engineered to read audio discs pressed by Philips and Sony under the Red Book standard, which specified 44.1 kHz sampling at 16 bits stereo. The term 'CD-ROM' emerged when the same optical format was adapted for computer data at higher density. By 2005, CD drives had largely ceded their role in consumer computing to DVD and solid-state storage, but they remain embedded in industrial controllers, medical imaging systems, and archival scanning stations where compatibility with decades of recorded discs justifies their continued inclusion.
