In aviation maintenance and airport operations, a movement is a single takeoff or landing event, counted as a discrete operation. An aircraft that departs and later returns completes two movements, not one. This simple unit of measure underpins how airports schedule maintenance, allocate gates, track utilization, and report operational statistics to regulatory authorities.
Movements form the basis for predictive maintenance scheduling on aircraft. Most maintenance intervals are expressed in flight hours, flight cycles, or calendar days, but airfield capacity planning relies on movement counts. A busy hub airport might handle 500 to 1,000 movements per day depending on runway configuration and traffic mix. Each movement generates a landing fee, parking charge, or slot usage that factors into the airport's revenue model.
The term distinguishes between ground activity and active flight operations. An aircraft towed from a maintenance hangar to a parking position, or pushed back from a gate, does not constitute a movement unless the engines are running for a takeoff. Similarly, a go-around (an aborted landing that climbs away) counts as only one movement because the aircraft has not successfully touched down and stopped. Touch-and-go operations in training add two movements per cycle.
Maintenance personnel use movement data to forecast workload. Turnaround times between movements vary by aircraft type: a regional turboprop might turn around in 20 minutes, while a wide-body jet requires 60 to 90 minutes for refueling, catering, cleaning, and safety checks. Heavy-maintenance checks are often scheduled around projected movement troughs, when fewer aircraft are actively cycling through the airfield.
Airport noise restrictions and environmental regulations often cap movements per hour or per day, making movement counts a regulatory constraint as well as an operational metric. Air traffic control clears each movement independently, and the Tower logs them for statistical reporting. Slot-controlled airports allocate takeoff and landing slots by movement, meaning a carrier holding a morning departure slot cannot use it for a landing without explicit reassignment.
