Mule twist is cotton yarn wound onto cops (conical bobbins) that has been spun on a mule frame rather than a throstle or ring frame. The mule frame, invented by Samuel Crompton in 1779, produces yarn with distinctive elastic properties because the spindle carriage moves toward and away from the rollers during twist insertion, creating a softer, more lively yarn than frame-spun equivalents of the same count.

The mechanical action of the mule creates uneven tension during spinning. As the carriage draws out, the twist is applied gradually rather than continuously, which reduces strain on individual fibers. This produces a yarn that stretches slightly under load and recovers its length, making it superior for applications where fabric drape and resilience matter: fine muslins, voiles, and high-quality dress goods. Frame-spun yarn, by contrast, tends to be harsher and less forgiving in the loom.

Practical distinctions

The cop itself, the tapered bobbin that holds mule-spun yarn, differs from the packages used on ring frames. Mule cops are typically longer and narrower, designed to accommodate the slower rotation speed of the mule spindle. A cop might hold 3 to 5 pounds of yarn, depending on the count. Yarn count (fineness) in mule twist was often expressed in hanks per pound for cotton, with fine mule twist running to 100s or higher.

By the early twentieth century, the efficiency advantage of ring frames meant most commodity cotton yarn was frame-spun. Mule frames remained in use primarily in Britain and parts of Europe for high-count, specialty work. The term mule twist became less common as mule spinning itself became obsolete in most mills, though the yarn characteristics it denotes continue to be valued in specialized textiles and are now often reproduced synthetically or through modern open-end spinning adapted to replicate that elasticity.

The name 'mule' comes from the frame itself, which was a hybrid machine, combining features of Hargreaves' spinning jenny and Arkwright's water frame, much as a mule is a cross between a horse and a donkey. Mule twist, then, refers not to an inherent twist direction or amount, but to the provenance of the yarn and the distinctive properties that came from that particular spinning method.
