Wrap per inch (WPI) is a physical measurement of yarn fineness, determined by counting how many wraps of that yarn fit within one linear inch when wound loosely around a rod or mandrel. It is a quick, practical way to estimate yarn weight without scales or reference tables, used across textile manufacturing, hand spinning, and yarn supply. Higher WPI numbers indicate thinner yarns; lower numbers indicate thicker yarns.
To measure WPI, a sample of yarn is wound snugly but without tension around a rod (typically 1/4 inch diameter), and the number of complete wraps covering exactly one inch of length is counted. A fingering-weight yarn might measure 24 to 28 WPI, while a bulky yarn might be 8 to 12 WPI. The method assumes yarn of consistent diameter and does not account for loft, crimp, or material density, so it works best as a rough classification tool rather than a precision standard.
WPI serves as a bridge between yarn weight and fiber content in mill environments and among spinners. A spindle of unknown provenance can be quickly sorted into a weight category; two yarns of identical WPI may still behave differently in a finished fabric because elasticity, twist, and fiber type affect handle and drape. The measurement is informal enough that mill workers and hobbyists alike trust it, yet it has real limits: it cannot account for yarn construction (plied versus singles, tightly or loosely twisted), so two 20 WPI samples may knit to very different gauges.
Why the name matters: "Wrap per inch" describes the literal action: you wrap the yarn and count the wraps. It avoids ambiguity with other fineness metrics like denier (weight per unit length) or tex (metric alternative to denier). In international trade, WPI remains most common in English-speaking yarn markets, while continental Europe and yarn producers often publish yardage per gram or meters per kilogram instead.
WPI is most reliable for single-strand, uniform-diameter yarns. Novelty yarns, slubs, and thick neps defeat the measurement. It also assumes ambient room tension and a standard mandrel; results can drift if wrapping pressure or rod diameter vary. For production control and specification work, mills rely instead on weighing a fixed length of yarn, but WPI remains the fastest field check and the most useful reference point in a spinner's or dyer's toolkit.
