A mushroom head is an enlarged, rounded cap formed at the end of a shaft, bolt, or rivet, wider than the shaft itself. It serves as a bearing surface or stop, preventing a component from passing through a hole or collar, or distributing load across a larger area. The shape resembles an actual mushroom, with the stem representing the narrower shaft and the cap representing the flared head.
Mushroom heads appear most commonly in rivets used in boiler construction and shipbuilding. A hot rivet is inserted through overlapping plates, and the protruding stem is hammered or pressed to form a second mushroom head on the opposite side, permanently locking the plates together. The enlarged cap distributes the clamping force, preventing the rivet from pulling through the material. Industrial riveting still uses this principle, though modern high-strength bolts have largely replaced structural rivets in new work.
In fasteners, the mushroom head takes different forms depending on application. A carriage bolt has a shallow, rounded mushroom cap that seats flush with the surface of wood or soft materials. A elevator bolt combines a mushroom head with a square neck to resist rotation in wooden beams. In machinery, mushroom-headed pins or stops serve as mechanical limits, preventing shafts or levers from rotating beyond safe bounds. The head must be large enough that neither metal fatigue nor plastic deformation allows it to sink through its seating surface.
Failure typically occurs when the mushroom head is undersized relative to the load, allowing progressive deformation or pull-through. Corrosion and stress concentration at the transition between shaft and cap can initiate cracks. In riveted structures, incomplete heading during manufacture creates a weak joint; the second mushroom head must form fully and uniformly around its entire perimeter. Modern inspection uses visual comparison to reference samples or measurement of head dimensions and surface irregularities.
The term reflects practical trade language rather than formal engineering nomenclature. Older technical documents refer to the same feature as a button head, counter head, or flush head depending on the specific application and whether the cap is meant to sit above, flush with, or recessed into the adjoining surface. Understanding the distinction matters because a rivet, bolt, or pin specified as mushroom head rather than socket head or flathead will behave differently under load and in assembly.
