Refineries produce naphtha as an intermediate stream that can be routed toward gasoline blending, chemical feedstock, or further processing.
The two main categories are aliphatic naphtha, rich in alkanes and cycloalkanes, and aromatic naphtha, which contains benzene, toluene, and xylene precursors. Light naphtha typically boils below 100°C and is often cracked into lighter olefins for plastics manufacture. Heavy naphtha boils above 100°C and is more likely to be reformed into high-octane gasoline components or sent to aromatics extraction units. This distinction matters because light naphtha vaporizes quickly and is more valuable to the petrochemical industry, while heavy naphtha behaves more like a traditional fuel cut.
In solvent applications, naphtha is prized for its ability to dissolve oils, resins, and other nonpolar organics without leaving residue. Rubber and adhesive manufacturers use it as a process solvent, and historical use in dry cleaning and paint thinning was common before volatility and health concerns restricted these outlets. Naphtha's evaporation rate and solvency power made it ideal for these roles, though it has been displaced in many applications by more controlled synthetic solvents.
Specification and hazards
Naphtha is controlled by vapor pressure limits (typically 40 to 65 kPa Reid vapor pressure for transport grades) and distillation range specifications. Flash point lies below 0°C for most commercial grades, making it flammable and requiring special handling in storage and transport. Exposure to naphtha vapor can cause acute central nervous system effects, and prolonged contact with skin may lead to defatting and dermatitis. Industrial workers handle it in closed systems wherever possible and monitor vapor concentrations in enclosed spaces.
The name comes from the Greek word for inflammable liquid and has been applied to volatile petroleum distillates for centuries. Modern naphtha occupies an ambiguous position: it is not a finished fuel like gasoline, nor a raw material like crude oil, but a processing stream that refineries route based on economic value, downstream demand, and seasonal patterns.
