A netphone is a telephone handset or software application that converts voice into digital packets and transmits them across the Internet Protocol network rather than through the public switched telephone network. The device or application handles audio codec compression, real-time transmission protocol management, and network routing to deliver voice data to another compatible endpoint. Early netphones were standalone hardware units resembling conventional phones; modern implementations are primarily software clients running on computers or mobile devices.

The core technical requirement is Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) capability. The netphone samples audio at rates typically between 8 kHz and 48 kHz, compresses it using codecs such as G.711, G.729, or Opus, and packetizes the compressed data into UDP or TCP packets with appropriate header information. These packets are then transmitted across any IP network: a local area network, a private network, or the public Internet. Reception works in reverse, with incoming packets decompressed and played through the handset or speakers.

Netphones require either a stable broadband connection (DSL, cable, fiber) for hardware units or internet access for software clients. Quality of service depends heavily on network conditions: packet loss above 1 to 2 percent becomes audible as drop-outs, and latency exceeding 150 milliseconds noticeably degrades conversation quality. Jitter buffers compensate for variable packet arrival times, but cannot eliminate the fundamental limitation that packet networks introduce variable delay.

Variants and deployment

Hardware netphones connect to a network via Ethernet or Wi-Fi and typically require registration with a SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) server or proprietary call management system. Software-based netphones like Skype or Zoom integrate codecs and network handling into general-purpose applications. Enterprise deployments often embed VoIP capability into private branch exchanges or unified communications platforms rather than using standalone netphones. Consumer VoIP services from providers using netphone technology typically charge less per minute than traditional long-distance, particularly for international calls, because routing voice as data packets costs less than provisioning circuit-switched trunk lines.

The term netphone became common in the 1990s as internet bandwidth became sufficient for real-time voice. The name directly describes the mechanism: a telephone that operates over the net (network). It distinguishes the device from conventional phones and from later mobile VoIP applications that do not require a dedicated handset. Reliability, echo cancellation, and emergency calling remain operational challenges in netphone deployment, particularly when networks become congested or when service depends on consumer-grade internet connections.
