ISP: the carrier that connects your site to the internet backbone

An Internet service provider is a company that operates networking infrastructure to deliver data connectivity between end users and the broader internet. In industrial and commercial settings, an ISP supplies the physical layer connection, usually through copper telephone lines, fiber optic cables, coaxial cable, or wireless radio links, terminating at your facility's demarcation point. The ISP owns or leases the transmission equipment, manages routing protocols, and maintains the backbone connections to peering exchanges where traffic from multiple carriers meets.

Industrial sites depend on ISPs for reliability and bandwidth that directly affect operations. A manufacturing plant running real-time process control systems, remote monitoring, or cloud-based supervisory systems needs guaranteed uptime and low latency. ISPs offer different service tiers: residential-grade broadband (typically 10 to 100 Mbps), business-class connections (100 Mbps to 10 Gbps), and dedicated circuits such as T1 lines (1.544 Mbps), Metro Ethernet, or dark fiber leases. Dedicated circuits carry service level agreements specifying uptime percentages (often 99.5 to 99.99 percent) and maximum latency, whereas residential service carries no such guarantee.

Common failure modes and redundancy

Single-ISP connections create a critical dependency. If the ISP's equipment fails or its backbone suffers congestion, your site loses connectivity. Industrial facilities handling mission-critical processes often maintain dual ISP connections from different carriers using separate physical routes and technologies, with automatic failover switching. This dual-connection approach requires a router or firewall that can detect primary link failure and reroute traffic within seconds.

ISPs in industrial regions may offer managed services beyond basic connectivity: static IP address blocks, DNS hosting, DDoS mitigation, or virtual private network termination. For electrical utilities, water treatment plants, and other infrastructure operators, some ISPs provide low-latency, low-jitter circuits suitable for SCADA communications, though these typically cost significantly more than standard business broadband.

The term originated in the early 1990s when commercial internet access required a dial-up modem connection through a service provider's local point of presence. Though dial-up has nearly vanished, the term persists because the core function remains unchanged: an organization operates shared networking infrastructure and sells access to it. Modern ISPs operate at vastly larger scale and higher speeds, but the business model and the role in the industrial supply chain have remained fundamentally the same.
