NO: contact that conducts until something breaks it
In plumbing control systems, NO stands for normally open. It describes an electrical contact or valve that remains in the open (conducting or flow-permitting) state under no applied force or power. The opposite state, NC (normally closed), blocks flow or breaks the circuit until activated. This distinction matters because it determines what happens when your control system loses power or a solenoid fails.
A NO solenoid valve, the most common application, keeps its outlet unsealed when de-energized. Water or air passes through freely. The moment you apply voltage to the coil, the electromagnetic field pulls an armature that seats a plunger against the orifice, shutting off flow. Remove power and it opens again. This makes NO valves useful for fail-safe fill circuits, where you want water to enter a tank if the control electronics die.
NC valves work opposite: power energizes the coil to unseat the plunger and allow flow. They are chosen when you need fail-safe shutdown. A broken wire or dead solenoid means zero flow, which is safer in many heating and pressurized systems. The choice between NO and NC shapes how you design redundancy, alarm logic, and what risks you accept if something fails.
In wiring diagrams and control schematics, you will see NO abbreviated alongside NC and other contact states. Relay contacts and electrical switches also carry NO and NC designations. A NO contact on a float switch, for example, closes the circuit when water reaches that level. Understanding which state is which prevents installation mistakes that can flood equipment or starve it of water at the wrong moment.
