A stench trap is a U-shaped or S-shaped bend in drainage pipework that holds standing water to create a barrier against sewer gases and odors rising from the system below. The water column in the trap acts as an airlock, preventing foul air from escaping through sink, floor, and roof drains while still allowing waste to flow downward. Without this seal, methane, hydrogen sulfide, and other decomposition gases would travel freely up into buildings, creating hazardous and offensive conditions.

The trap works through a simple principle: water naturally settles at the lowest point of a U-bend or S-bend. When waste passes through, it displaces some water but does not remove it entirely if the trap is properly dimensioned. A typical domestic trap might hold 75 to 150 millimeters of standing water, depending on the pipe diameter and bend geometry. The depth of this water seal directly determines the trap's resistance to gas breakthrough, with deeper seals offering better protection against pressure fluctuations in the drain system.

Stench traps differ from modern P-traps, S-traps, and bottle traps mainly in their historical context and application rather than fundamental design. An S-trap (common in older installations) has the inlet and outlet on the same vertical line; a P-trap bends to the side before exiting horizontally. The term stench trap is now less common in modern plumbing codes, having been largely superseded by standardized trap types that serve the same purpose. However, the principle remains: any trap protecting a drain from sewer gas is functioning as a stench trap.

Failure modes and maintenance

A stench trap loses effectiveness when its water seal becomes depleted. This occurs through evaporation in unused drains (floor drains in unheated spaces are vulnerable), siphoning during rapid drainage of adjacent pipes, or blockages that prevent proper water flow. A dried-out trap allows gases to enter the building directly. Conversely, overflowing or backing-up traps indicate downstream blockages and require clearing, since water cannot settle properly at the bend if the system is congested.

Building codes require stench traps (or modern equivalents) on all drainage openings that vent into occupied spaces. Roof penetrations, vent stacks, and gully drains must all include seals to prevent atmospheric discharge of sewer vapor. In industrial facilities handling food processing, chemical manufacturing, or waste treatment, stench trap maintenance is critical to both safety and regulatory compliance, as hydrogen sulfide can be acutely toxic at high concentrations.
