In railway terminology, normal describes the default or resting position of a switch (or points, as they are called in British railways). When a switch is set to normal, the movable rails are positioned to direct traffic along the main line or the most frequently travelled route. This is the position the switch returns to when no active signal or command is given, and it is typically the configuration that allows the highest-speed through movement.

The normal position is mechanically established by gravity, by spring tension, or by the weight distribution of the switch blades themselves. On a standard railway switch, the movable blade sits against one of two fixed stock rails, and normal is whichever of these two positions requires the least energy to maintain. In most installations, this is also the safest default: if power or control signal is lost, the switch fails into the normal position rather than leaving the route undefined.

The opposite state is called reverse. When a switch is thrown to reverse, the movable rails are positioned to direct a train onto a secondary line, siding, or diverging route. Reverse requires active intervention, either manual (hand-throwing) or powered (electric actuators), and must be continuously maintained on many older installations. A switch left in reverse without active holding will gradually drift back toward normal as bearing wear and vibration take their toll.

The terminology is independent of physical direction; a switch can point left or right, but what matters operationally is which position is default. Dispatchers and signalling systems use normal and reverse as abstract logical states. A switch showing normal indication on the signal gantry means the route is clear for main-line traffic; reverse means the diverging route is open and main-line traffic is blocked.
