blind spot: where mirrors fail and trains hide

A blind spot on a locomotive, rail vehicle, or tram is any area immediately adjacent to the vehicle that cannot be seen by the operator from the cab, regardless of mirror adjustment or window positioning. On most rail stock, this includes the zones directly alongside the cab at platform level, beneath the overhang of the body, and immediately forward or aft of the driving position. Because rail vehicles are long and their cabs are positioned high and forward, large stretches of track and platform run invisible to the driver once the train has come to a stop or is moving slowly.

The geometry of blind spots varies sharply with vehicle type. A suburban electric multiple unit with a low-slung motor car and large side windows has different dead zones than a heavyweight freight locomotive with its cab mounted high on the frame and narrow side portholes. Trams and light rail vehicles, which operate closer to pedestrian level and must stop frequently at street-running sections, often have their worst blind spots at platform height on both sides of the vehicle. The engineering standard for visibility typically requires convex mirrors positioned at specific angles, but even with multiple mirrors, no train cab design eliminates all blind spots entirely.

Blind spots create genuine hazard. Most railway infrastructure now includes sight-blocking barriers on platforms and at depot sidings to prevent people from entering these invisible zones while a vehicle is present or moving. Many rail operators mandate that a second crew member walk alongside or direct vehicles during low-speed movements in confined spaces. Tram operators working in mixed traffic must assume certain areas cannot be seen and operate accordingly; some systems require spotters or enforce reduced speed in heavy-use platforms where the risk is greatest. Network Rail and equivalent bodies issue specific guidance on permitted working distances from standing vehicles for this reason.

The term itself is borrowed from road transport but takes on sharper meaning in rail because of the vehicle length and the fixed infrastructure. A car driver's blind spot might hide a motorcycle in the adjacent lane; a train driver's blind spot can hide an entire platform full of workers. This is why rail yards enforce strict rules about radio communication, hand signals visible to cab crew, and the requirement to treat blind areas as always potentially occupied unless positively confirmed otherwise.
