The process of draining old oil from an engine or gearbox and refilling it with fresh oil, often done at recommended intervals.

An oil change removes spent lubricant from an engine or transmission and replaces it with new oil that meets the machine's viscosity and performance specifications. The old oil, darkened by heat and contamination, is drained through a plug at the sump's lowest point; a new oil filter is installed to trap particles that would otherwise circulate back into bearings and cylinder walls. This routine service protects internal metal surfaces from corrosion and wear.
Interval timing depends on oil type and engine design. Conventional mineral oil typically requires changes every 5,000 kilometers or three months; synthetic oils extend this to 10,000 kilometers or six months or longer. Heavy-duty diesel engines and older gasoline engines may need more frequent changes. Modern vehicles with synthetic fill often display a service reminder on the dashboard rather than following a fixed schedule, calculating wear based on driving patterns and ambient temperature.
Oil viscosity matters critically. A 10W-40 designation means the oil flows at 10 centistokes at minus 18 degrees Celsius (the W rating) and maintains 40 centistokes at 100 degrees. Using the wrong grade, such as 5W-30 in an engine designed for 10W-40, can cause bearing starvation under load or excessive leakage past seals in cold weather. Specification sheets issued by manufacturers (such as American Petroleum Institute or European Automobile Manufacturers Association standards) must be consulted before purchase.
Overfilling the crankcase causes oil to foam and reduces film strength; underfilling starves bearing surfaces and triggers low-pressure warning lights. Delayed changes allow acid buildup and sludge formation, thickening the oil until it cannot flow to the top of the cylinder head, leaving cam and rocker arm surfaces dry. Metal particles accumulate in cartridge filters; once the filter capacity is exhausted, a bypass valve opens and unfiltered oil circulates, accelerating wear. Running an engine on degraded oil is the single fastest way to destroy bearings and piston rings.
The term "oil change" reflects industrial simplicity: you change what is there for something new. In gearboxes, the same principle applies, though intervals stretch much longer (often 50,000 kilometers or more) because the fluid sees less thermal stress and fewer combustion byproducts. Automatic transmissions, by contrast, may require drain-and-fill service every 60,000 kilometers, depending on driving conditions and manufacturer guidance. Some sealed units claim lifetime fill; in practice, heat and friction still degrade the fluid, making selective replacement of cooler lines and torque converter contents a compromise measure.
