An oil filter is a cartridge or can-type vessel packed with a porous medium, usually pleated paper or synthetic fiber, that traps particulate matter suspended in circulating oil. As oil flows through under pump pressure, the filter medium captures ferrous wear debris, dust, soot, and oxidation byproducts, returning clean fluid to the system. The filter sits downstream of the oil sump or reservoir but upstream of components that require protection: bearing surfaces, valve bodies, pump internals, and turbines.

Industrial oil filters come in two main housing styles. Spin-on filters, common in engines and mobile equipment, screw directly onto a threaded port and house both medium and bypass valve in a metal canister. Element filters feature a removable cartridge inserted into a bowl-shaped or cylindrical head, typical in larger stationary machinery, hydraulic systems, and compressors. Element filters allow media replacement without disturbing the housing, reducing oil spillage during maintenance.

Filter sizing depends on flow rate and contamination target. A 10-micron filter passes particles smaller than 10 micrometers; a 25-micron filter is coarser. System design dictates the rating: hydraulic circuits often specify 3 to 10 microns to protect servo valves and actuators; engine oil filters typically run 20 to 30 microns. Pressure-drop across the element rises as contaminant load builds; when differential pressure hits a threshold (usually 3 to 5 bar), a spring-loaded bypass valve opens, permitting unfiltered oil to flow rather than starving the system.

Failure modes and consequences

A bypassed filter delivers unfiltered oil to critical surfaces, accelerating wear. Conversely, a plugged filter that fails to bypass causes starvation, leading to oil starvation in bearings and rapid damage. In industrial presses and compressors, collapsed filter media can release accumulated particles downstream. Water ingress through a damaged filter seal contaminates hydraulic oil, causing corrosion and varnish buildup. Regular element inspection and scheduled replacement on time-based or condition-based intervals prevents these failures.

Oil filters are classified by ISO 4406 cleanliness codes (reported as particles greater than 4, 6, and 14 micrometers per milliliter). A hydraulic system specified at ISO 18/16/13 requires continuous filtration to maintain that standard. The filter's beta ratio, measured by particle counting, quantifies capture efficiency at a given micron size: a 25-micron filter with beta-200 means it traps 200 particles larger than 25 micrometers for every one that passes through.
