Cutting fabric on the bias means cutting at a 45 degree angle to both the warp and weft threads. The grain of a woven fabric runs parallel and perpendicular to the selvage; the bias is the diagonal path between them. When you cut this way, the resulting fabric piece has stretch properties that do not exist along the straight grain.

The mechanical reason is simple: thread crimping. Along the straight grain, yarns are locked in place by the weave structure. Cut at 45 degrees, however, and the threads can slip past each other more easily. A bias-cut garment piece will stretch and conform to body curves under tension without needing darts, seams, or elastic. This property made bias cutting the foundation of 1930s and 1940s drape tailoring in women's wear.

Bias strips are also cut deliberately for binding edges and facings because the stretch prevents puckering when the binding is sewn around curves, corners, and armholes. A 1 inch wide bias strip cut from a 45 inch wide fabric piece will bend and flex without buckling. Straight grain binding will wrinkle when forced to follow a curved edge.

Limitations and trade-offs

Bias cutting wastes fabric. A straight-grain garment panel can be nested tightly on a layout; a bias-cut panel requires more width and length to avoid the selvage. Production efficiency drops significantly. The stretch, while useful for fit, also means the garment can distort during wear and washing if the fabric lacks recovery. Bias-cut pieces require careful handling during sewing to prevent stretching out of shape before the seams lock them in place.

The term appears in pattern instructions, fabric specifications, and garment construction standards. It remains essential vocabulary in apparel manufacturing, particularly in dressmaking, swimwear, and any knit or woven application where controlled stretch and smooth drape are required.
