Tacking is the process of joining fabric pieces with loose, widely-spaced stitches before permanent seaming. The stitches are deliberately large (typically 6 to 12 mm) and weak enough to pull out by hand without damaging the base cloth. In garment manufacture, tacking secures seams for fitting, prevents fabric slippage during machining, and allows adjustment before final sewing.
In hand work, tacking uses a needle and thread with simple running stitch, often in a contrasting thread color for visibility. Industrial tacking machines stitch at higher speeds than final seaming but with longer stitch length and looser tension. Tacking thread is often inexpensive and may be finer than seaming thread; polyester or cotton serves equally well since the stitches will not remain in the finished garment.
Common applications and variants
Tacking appears throughout tailoring, dressmaking, and upholstery. In bespoke tailoring, tacking holds interfacing and fashion fabric together during pressing and fitting before permanent topstitching. In mass production, it positions pockets, zips, and facing pieces for operators to sew permanently. Basting (an older term, still used interchangeably) sometimes refers to hand tacking specifically, while machine tacking describes industrial needle work.
Problems arise when tacking stitches are too tight: they resist removal and may leave needle holes or slight puckering in fine fabrics. Conversely, stitches that are too loose or spaced too far apart fail to hold layers steady during machining, causing drift or puckering in the final seam. The thread must break cleanly when pulled out; synthetic threads occasionally stick or fray rather than snap.
Tacking survives in modern manufacturing because it remains faster and cheaper than pinning or adhesive methods for many operations, and it leaves no residue or permanent marks. In high-volume production, tacking is sometimes omitted in favor of direct machining with advanced presser feet, but in garment factories where fitting allowances matter or where fabric is slippery or delicate, tacking remains essential.
