The period of time after an adhesive has been applied and allowed to dry, during which an effective bond can be achieved by joining the two surfaces.

Open time is the working interval between applying an adhesive to a surface and the moment it becomes too dry to form a strong bond. During this period, the two adherends (surfaces being joined) can still be pressed together and repositioned to create an effective joint. Once open time expires, the adhesive has lost enough solvent or water that pressing fresh surfaces together will not produce a reliable bond; the adhesive film has skinned over or stiffened past the point where molecules can flow and interlock with a new substrate.

The length of open time depends on the adhesive chemistry, ambient temperature, humidity, and substrate porosity. Polyurethane construction adhesives typically offer 15 to 30 minutes at 70°F and 50% relative humidity, while water-based wood glues may allow 5 to 15 minutes. Epoxies and polyester resins can be formulated for open times ranging from minutes to hours by adjusting resin-to-hardener ratios. Porous substrates like wood or concrete absorb solvent or water faster, shortening open time; non-porous materials like metal or plastic extend it. Cold weather slows evaporation and curing, lengthening the window; heat accelerates it dramatically.

Practical implications on the job

Contractors must coordinate surface preparation, adhesive application, and assembly work within the open time window. Exceeding it means scraping off the adhesive and reapplying, wasting material and labor. Conversely, working too quickly risks incomplete wetting of the second surface or poor positioning. Preheating substrates in winter or improving ventilation in humid conditions can manage open time. Many construction adhesives are labeled with open time at specific temperature and humidity ranges; ignoring those conditions is a common source of job failures and callbacks.

Open time differs from initial set, which is when the adhesive stops flowing but still lacks full strength, and from cure time, the period needed to reach rated bonding strength. A adhesive may have an open time of 20 minutes but require 24 hours to cure fully. Some formulations include tackifiers or thickeners that make the adhesive sticky immediately (reducing open time for positioning) while others remain mobile longer to ensure good contact with uneven substrates.

In factory settings, open time constraints drive the layout of assembly lines and the choice between hand application and automated dispensing. In field construction, especially on large surfaces or vertical applications, open time often becomes the limiting factor in how quickly a crew can move through installations. Understanding and respecting open time is fundamental to avoiding weak joints and costly rework.
