An ore car is a railway wagon with reinforced sides and floor, designed to haul dense mineral loads from mine to mill or to processing facilities. The open top allows material to be loaded directly by shovel, conveyor, or bucket, and the car typically sits low to the track bed to keep its center of gravity stable when heavily laden. Weights per loaded car routinely exceed 100 tonnes, so the frame, axles, and coupling systems must be built to industrial strength.
The standard ore car empties through gates or hoppers in the floor, gravity-fed into storage bins or onto secondary conveyor systems. Cars designed for iron ore, copper ore, and crushed stone follow similar principles but differ in floor slope and gate design. A steep hopper angle (40 to 50 degrees) ensures rapid unloading of free-flowing material, while wet or sticky ores may require vibrating mechanisms attached to the car floor to break up bridging.
Construction and variants
Ore cars are built from mild steel plate and structural sections, often 8 to 12 mm thick on floor and sides to resist impact and abrasion. Side posts are bolted or welded to corner columns that anchor to a steel underframe. The bottom hopper is a cone or V-shaped section that concentrates material toward discharge openings. Internal abrasion liners, made from replaceable steel plate or ceramics, extend service life in high-wear applications such as quarrying or magnetic concentration plants.
Capacity ranges from 20 to 100 cubic metres, and the car is matched to the locomotive's tractive effort and to the track gauge and gradient of the railway system. In mountainous operations, ore cars may be coupled in sets of five or more on grades under 2 percent; steeper sections require lighter loads or rack railways. Wheel diameter typically ranges from 660 to 860 mm to provide adequate bearing clearance and ride stability over rough industrial track.
The term ore car is specific to the mineral industries; broader usage favors hopper car or gondola car for grain, coal, or aggregate. Some railways distinguish bottom-dump cars (hopper gates) from side-dump cars (pivoting or hinged sides), though the latter are less common for ore because vibration can loosen sideboards under continuous load. Maintenance focuses on gate seals, axle lubrication, and rust prevention in wet climates.
