picocell

A wireless communication system covering a small area, such as a single office or railway station, often used to extend cellular network coverage to indoor areas where signals cannot easily penetrate.

A picocell is a low-power cellular base station designed to cover a small area, typically between 50 and 200 meters in radius. It operates by receiving weak or nonexistent signals from the main network and rebroadcasting them at full strength within a confined space, making it useful for buildings, tunnels, trains, or other locations where conventional cell towers cannot deliver reliable coverage. The equipment itself is compact, often housed in a box the size of a desktop router, and connects to the wider mobile network via backhaul, either wired (fiber, copper, or microwave) or increasingly via a standard internet connection.

Picocells differ from femtocells and macrocells primarily in their coverage radius and power output. A femtocell covers roughly 10 to 50 meters and serves a single home or small office; a picocell handles multiple concurrent users over a larger area; a macrocell is a traditional tower covering several kilometers. Picocells typically transmit at 20 to 24 decibels-milliwatts, compared to femtocells at 17 to 20 dBm. The choice between these tiers depends on the size of the space needing coverage and the expected user density.

Installation and maintenance

Installing a picocell requires access to reliable backhaul and a suitable mounting location, often on an interior wall, suspended ceiling, or pole. The device must be positioned to avoid interference with nearby picocells, which operate on the same spectrum as standard mobile networks; coordination with the network operator prevents handoff problems and call drops. A single picocell unit typically costs between one and several thousand dollars depending on the manufacturer and capability, with additional expenses for installation, integration, and ongoing network management.

Common failures stem from poor backhaul quality, causing dropped calls and slow data speeds that defeat the purpose of the installation. Handover between a picocell and the macrocell network sometimes produces brief disconnection; modern equipment reduces this lag but cannot eliminate it entirely. Interference from cordless phones, WiFi equipment, and adjacent picocells can also degrade performance if frequency planning is inadequate.

The term "pico" derives from the SI prefix meaning one-trillionth, reflecting how small the coverage area is compared to macrocells. Picocells are distinct from WiFi solutions because they authenticate via the standard cellular network and consume licensed spectrum, whereas WiFi offload systems hand traffic to an unlicensed band. In railways, hospitals, and underground transit systems, picocells remain the standard tool for delivering seamless mobile service where conventional towers fail.
