Of rail vehicles, or loads carried on freight vehicles: where dimensions exceed the loading gauge or structure gauge for a particular line or route.
out of gauge: too big for the railway line
A rail vehicle or cargo is out of gauge when its width, height, or length exceeds the maximum dimensions permitted for a given railway line or route. Railways establish strict dimensional limits, called the loading gauge (for freight) or structure gauge (for permanent way clearances), to ensure safe passage through tunnels, under bridges, and between platforms. When something exceeds these limits, it cannot use that route without risk of collision or derailment.
The loading gauge varies significantly by country and railway operator. British railways, for example, use the W10 gauge for most freight lines, which permits a maximum load height of 4,040 mm above rail level and width of 2,750 mm. Continental European gauges differ, as do American clearance profiles. A container or vehicle might be within gauge on one network but out of gauge on another, requiring rerouting or special handling.
Practical consequences
Out of gauge loads require expensive workarounds. They may be rerouted via alternative lines with higher clearances, which adds cost and transit time. Some require special transport vehicles with lower deck heights or reduced loading capacity. Heavy industrial equipment, transformers, and prefabricated structures frequently trigger out of gauge issues, particularly when transported at odd angles or with protective packaging that increases overall dimensions.
The problem worsens in older rail networks where tunnels and bridge clearances have remained constant for a century or more, while modern freight vehicles and containerized cargo have grown larger. Some routes with marginal clearances require vehicles to travel at restricted speeds or have spotting assistance to ensure safe centering on the track.
Advance notification is critical. Freight operators must declare dimensions and route requests well ahead of shipment; railway planners then determine feasibility and may impose special conditions such as escort staff, speed restrictions, or scheduled off-peak transit to minimize conflicts with normal traffic.
