To outbrake is to achieve a shorter stopping distance from a given speed than another vehicle. In racing and high-performance driving, this is a deliberate competitive maneuver, typically executed into a corner where a driver brakes later and harder than a rival, forcing them to yield or risk collision. The driver who outbrakes successfully enters the turn ahead, gaining position through superior braking performance rather than superior speed.
The physics of outbraking depends on three variables: initial speed, brake force, and available grip. A driver with a lighter vehicle, stickier tires, or better brake cooling can outbrake one with heavier mass or worn compounds at the same initial velocity. Professional racing drivers practice threshold braking, applying maximum deceleration without locking the wheels, allowing the vehicle to slow from 200 km/h to 80 km/h in under 100 meters on slick race tires. Road cars with standard compounds and pad temperatures cannot match these numbers.
Outbraking requires precise technique and carries real risk. A driver who misjudges their own braking capability or the grip available from cold tires can lock the wheels, lose directional control, and cause a collision. Wet or contaminated road surfaces sharply reduce available deceleration, making attempted outbrake maneuvers on public roads particularly dangerous. Series regulations in some racing categories restrict late-braking moves through contact rules to prevent punt-style passes.
The term is specific to motorsport and high-performance automotive contexts. It does not appear in standard vehicle maintenance or engineering references, and has no application to routine driving. A driver may be said to have been outbraked when a rival successfully executes this maneuver, gaining a position that would otherwise require superior straightline speed or earlier turn-in.
