Overfiring occurs when ceramic ware is exposed to temperatures above the optimum range for its clay body and glaze composition. In practice, this means the kiln atmosphere reaches or exceeds the vitrification point where the material begins to deform, bloat, or fuse uncontrollably. A stoneware piece designed to mature at cone 6 (around 1222°C) will start to overfire at cone 8 or beyond, where the clay becomes overly dense, the glaze surface turns glossy and thick, and structural integrity fails.

The most visible consequence is warping. Overfired ware slumps on the shelf, loses its original shape, and may weld itself to kiln furniture. The clay body darkens and becomes glass-like; porosity drops to near zero, which sounds desirable but comes with brittleness. Glazes applied at the correct temperature may crawl, pool, or run off vertical surfaces when heat climbs too high. Colors shift unpredictably: blues lean toward purple, reds turn muddy, and some oxides simply burn out of the melt.

Overfiring stems from poor kiln control: faulty pyrometers, sagging brickwork that traps heat, fuel flow that is not properly regulated, or a simple misunderstanding of the firing schedule required for a given clay type. Industrial producers use witness cones placed throughout the kiln chamber to spot temperature spikes before whole batches are ruined. Single-fire operations and tunnel kilns are less prone to this than updraft kilns because the thermal profile is more uniform.

In functional ware production, overfiring is a critical defect because it compromises both appearance and performance. Architectural tile and refractories have narrower firing windows than decorative ware; overfiring can cause dimensional creep that ruins fit and function. The term itself emerged from the practical experience of ceramicists who learned the hard way that more heat is not always better: each clay and glaze has a peak, and overshooting it is waste.
