overfired

Fired at a high (or excessively high) temperature.

A ceramic piece is overfired when it has been exposed to temperatures above the ideal range for its clay body and glaze system. The threshold varies dramatically by material: earthenware may overfired above 1100°C, while stoneware begins to suffer past 1280°C, and porcelain can tolerate higher peaks before damage occurs. The result is permanent and irreversible.

Overfiring causes several distinct failures. The clay body itself can bloat, as gases trapped inside expand faster than the vitrification can seal them. Surface glazes may run excessively, pooling at the foot and fusing to kiln shelves. Colors can shift or burn out entirely: cobalt blues deepen and muddy, chrome greens turn brown, and some organic stains vanish completely. Dense materials may warp, slump, or crack as they approach their melting point. The ware becomes brittle and prone to crazing as thermal expansion coefficients go out of balance.

The term contrasts with underfired ware, which remains porous and weak because the kiln never reached temperature. Overfiring is the more catastrophic fault in commercial work because underfired pieces are simply soft; overfired pieces are often unusable scrap. A kiln that runs consistently hot by 50°C or 100°C will produce systematically overfired batches, wasting material and labor until the root cause (pyrometer drift, fuel flow, kiln shelf placement) is corrected.

Kilnworkers monitor firing by cone placement, pyrometer readings, and visual inspection through the peephole. Cones melt in sequence at precise temperatures and serve as the most reliable check against overfiring. Digital kilns with programmable temperature ramps reduce overfiring incidents, but mechanical and fuel-fired kilns still depend on operator judgment and calibrated instruments. A kiln that overshoots by even 30°C during the final hours can compromise an entire load.

In industrial ware production, overfiring waste is tracked separately from underfired and normal scrap. Some factories deliberately run slightly cool rather than risk overfiring, accepting slightly weaker cups or tiles rather than glaze defects. Conservation work on historical ceramics requires knowing whether a piece was underfired (salvageable through refiring) or overfired (no remedy possible).
