overfogged

Overfogged: focused too close to the lens

An optical system is overfogged when its focal point sits in front of the image plane, sensor, or retina rather than directly on it. In a camera or microscope, this means the light cone converges before reaching the film or detector, producing a blurred image. The term applies equally to the eye itself when myopic: light from distant objects focuses ahead of the retina, requiring correction via negative (diverging) lenses to push the focal point back where it belongs.

Overfog occurs because the optical distance through the system is too short relative to the refractive power of the lens elements. In a camera, it results from manufacturing tolerances in lens spacing, thermal expansion of the barrel, or incorrect assembly. In microscopy, it can happen if the specimen slide is mounted too close to the objective, or if the objective has drifted mechanically. The problem compounds at higher magnifications, where depth of focus shrinks and misalignment becomes visible immediately.

Detection and correction

The clearest symptom is progressive blurring that cannot be corrected by racking focus backward (or forward, depending on the instrument). In manual focus systems, turning the focus knob toward the observer will sharpen the image until the focal point aligns with the image plane. In autofocus systems, overfog may cause hunting, where the motor oscillates without locking. Permanent fixes require mechanical adjustment, shim replacement, or lens recalibration by a technician.

The inverse condition, underfog, places the focal point behind the image plane and is corrected by focusing away from the observer. Both terms appear most often in technical literature on precision optics, microscopy maintenance manuals, and photographic equipment repair. Understanding whether an image is overfogged or underfogged is essential when diagnosing optical faults, since the remedy is opposite in each case.
