A page is a short text or numeric message transmitted to a pager, a battery-powered portable receiver that fits in a pocket or on a belt. The message travels wirelessly via a paging network, typically using radio frequencies in the VHF or UHF bands, and alerts the recipient through sound, vibration, or light. Pages were the dominant form of mobile communication from the 1980s through the early 2000s, particularly in healthcare, emergency services, and financial trading where reliability and instant availability mattered more than the ability to send replies.

The mechanics of a page depend on the paging protocol and network architecture. In a typical system, a sender calls a paging terminal by telephone, voice or data line, and enters the recipient's pager ID and message text. The terminal broadcasts the message to one or more transmission towers covering a geographic area. The pager receives this broadcast, decodes the message using its stored ID, and notifies the user. Alphanumeric pagers can display full text; numeric pagers show only digits, limiting messages to callback numbers or coded information. Tone-only pagers simply beep, leaving the user to check a predetermined location or call back an operator.

Reliability and limitation

Pagers became entrenched in sectors where dropped calls and coverage gaps posed unacceptable risks. A page sent into the ether would eventually reach the recipient's device, even if the bearer was moving or in a weak signal area, because the broadcast model meant no active connection was required. The trade-off was one-way communication; a page could be received but not answered directly, forcing the recipient to find a telephone or other messaging device to respond. This asymmetry made pages useful for urgent notifications and non-time-sensitive information but inadequate for conversations.

The term fell out of common industrial use as cellular networks improved in coverage and speed, and as two-way SMS texting and internet-based messaging became universal. However, some critical infrastructure, hospitals, and niche applications continued relying on paging well into the 2010s because the radio infrastructure proved more resilient during cell network outages and required less power per transmission. The word "page" survives in the verb form, meaning to send such a message or to alert someone through any public address or notification system.
