A parison is a preliminary mass of molten glass, typically spherical or bulbous, that has just been gathered on the end of a blowpipe or gathering iron directly from the furnace. It is not yet a finished vessel; it is the next step after extracting raw glass from the melting tank. The glassworker rolls and shapes this hot gather on a marver, a flat steel or stone surface, to achieve a roughly uniform thickness and remove surface irregularities before beginning the actual blowing or forming process.
The word comes from the French, where parison originally referred to a ready or prepared thing. In glassmaking, it became fixed terminology because the parison represents that critical prepared state: glass hot enough to work, clean enough to proceed, and roughly balanced enough that the next stage of shaping can happen without major corrections. Different furnace designs and gathering techniques produce parisons of different sizes; a hand-blown stemware maker might work with a parison of 100 to 300 grams, while industrial processes gather much larger masses for machine pressing or blowing.
Variants and context
The parison looks deceptively simple but its condition determines success downstream. If the glass is too cool, it will not blow evenly and the walls will thicken unevenly. If it contains bubbles or inclusions picked up from the furnace, these defects will magnify during blowing. A skilled glassmaker judges the gather's temperature by color, fluidity, and feel on the marver. Industrial glassmaking pipelines often use preheated molds or air-slip forming to shape the parison into nearly final dimensions before the actual blow, reducing the work needed in the next stage.The parison occupies an intermediate position in the broader glass production workflow. Between the melting furnace and the finished article stand the gathering, the parison stage, the blowing or pressing, the annealing oven, and finishing work. Any flaw in the parison usually cannot be hidden; it will either be worked out during blowing, or it will be rejected as scrap. For this reason, parisonmaking remains a recognized skill even in mechanized plants, and the quality of the parison is often the first place a production issue is diagnosed.
