PATA

Initialism of parallel ATA: a computer bus technology primarily designed for transfer of data to and from a hard disk.

PATA: the parallel drive interface that ruled before SATA

PATA stands for Parallel ATA, a computer bus standard that moved data between a motherboard and storage devices, chiefly hard disks and CD/DVD drives. Unlike its successor SATA, which transmits data serially over a thin cable, PATA sends multiple bits simultaneously across a 40-pin or 80-pin ribbon cable, typically at speeds up to 133 MB/s on modern implementations (Ultra DMA mode 5).

The physical interface consists of a flat, multi-conductor ribbon cable connecting the drive directly to the motherboard or a controller card. PATA supported two devices per cable: a master and slave, selected via jumper pins on the drive itself. The 40-pin connector appeared on older systems; the 80-pin variant arrived with faster data rates to reduce signal integrity problems. Ribbon cables were bulky and difficult to route inside compact cases, and the dual-device limitation created bottlenecks when both drives transferred data simultaneously.

PATA (originally called IDE, then EIDE) dominated personal computing from the 1980s through the early 2000s. It was cheap to implement, worked reliably for typical workloads, and required no specialized drivers in most operating systems. However, SATA drives began shipping around 2003, offering thinner cables, hotter-swap capability, and serial transmission that proved more scalable. Manufacturers ceased PATA production for new drives around 2010.

Today, PATA lives in legacy systems. Technicians still encounter PATA drives in retired computers, older test equipment, and archived devices. Recovering data from a PATA drive requires a working controller or a USB adapter, neither of which is trivial to source. Many modern motherboards abandoned PATA headers entirely, making in-place diagnosis or replacement difficult without external hardware.

The term PATA itself arose to distinguish the parallel standard from Serial ATA when both coexisted. The name reflects the transmission method rather than the connector type, which is why some older documentation uses IDE or EIDE interchangeably, though strictly speaking PATA encompasses faster variants. Understanding the distinction matters when sourcing replacement cables or troubleshooting signal-integrity issues on older industrial PCs and embedded systems that still rely on this interface.
