baseband

Baseband is the original electrical signal before any modulation or frequency shifting occurs. In industrial electronics, it represents the raw data or control signal at its native frequency, typically ranging from DC to a few megahertz depending on the application. A baseband signal might be a 4, 20 mA current loop from a sensor, a 0, 10 V analog command, or a digital pulse train from a PLC. The term distinguishes these low-frequency working signals from the high-frequency carrier waves used to transmit them over distance.

When a baseband signal must travel beyond a few meters, it is usually modulated onto a carrier wave: amplitude modulation (AM), frequency modulation (FM), or phase modulation are common choices. A pressure transducer outputs a baseband voltage; this voltage is then modulated onto a radio frequency carrier for wireless transmission, or it remains baseband if sent by twisted pair to a local receiver. Industrial protocols like Profibus, EtherCAT, and CAN all transmit modulated signals on copper or fiber, but the data they carry is conceptually baseband: the actual measurement or command before encoding for the physical medium.

Control cabinets and instrument rooms typically work entirely in baseband. A 24 VDC distributed power supply, analog input modules accepting 4, 20 mA, and relay outputs all operate at baseband frequencies. Noise becomes a serious risk at baseband; poor shielding, long untwisted leads, and proximity to switching supplies cause crosstalk and signal degradation. Differential signaling and twisted pairs are standard defenses because baseband signals lack the error correction and redundancy that modulated RF systems can employ.

The economics of baseband versus modulated transmission shift with distance and bandwidth. Baseband transmission requires short, expensive shielded cable; modulated transmission permits longer runs and lower cable cost but adds complexity at both ends. An offshore platform might use radio frequency modulation over several kilometers to reach the processing facility, while a machine tool uses baseband signals distributed within its frame and cabinet. The term baseband appears most often in discussions of signal integrity, cable routing, and noise control rather than in equipment names or product lists.
