A pattern box is a fixed container mounted on either side of a power loom, holding multiple shuttles pre-wound with different colored or textured yarns. During weaving, the loom mechanism selects and ejects the appropriate shuttle for each pick, allowing the weaver to create patterns, stripes, and color changes without stopping to rethread manually. The boxes are typically mounted at the same height as the loom race, within arm's reach for quick shuttle inspection and replacement.
Most pattern boxes hold between 4 and 12 shuttles, arranged in a vertical or slightly angled stack. Each shuttle sits in its own slot with springs or guides to prevent tangling and ensure smooth ejection into the shed. The exact number and arrangement depend on loom width and the complexity of the design being woven. On older looms, boxes are simple wooden or metal frames; on modern looms they integrate with dobby or jacquard shedding systems that automatically sequence shuttle changes according to the design program.
Shuttle management and wear
The shuttles themselves must be in good condition to fly across the loom smoothly. Worn bobbin eyes, dents, or splintered wood cause shuttle drop-offs, broken warp yarns, and thread entanglement. Shuttles are typically made from hardwood like maple or boxwood and require periodic sanding and repair. The pattern box design must allow for quick removal and reinsertion of shuttles so weavers can swap out damaged ones or change yarn colors mid-shift without losing loom time.The term reflects the box's practical function rather than its technical role: it is simply a container where pattern options, in the form of pre-loaded shuttles, are stored and accessed. In jacquard and dobby weaving, pattern boxes work in concert with the loom's control mechanism, which reads the design card or program and signals which shuttle to send into the shed for each pick. Failure of the shuttle selection mechanism often affects pattern box reliability, creating a point of vulnerability in automated weaving.
Proper organization of pattern boxes is critical for production scheduling. Weavers must label shuttles clearly, ensure bobbins are wound to the correct tension, and maintain boxes free of debris and loose thread. In high-speed production, even a few seconds of downtime to clear a jammed shuttle or locate the correct color shuttle adds up across a shift. Many mills maintain separate spares of commonly used shuttles to reduce the delay when repairs are needed.
