Self-fabric: matching trim from the same cloth
Self-fabric means using a section of the same material to bind, face, or reinforce another section of the same garment. Instead of reaching for a contrasting binding tape or facing fabric, the cutter obtains strips or pieces from the same bolt or roll that forms the main body. This is common in collars, cuffs, armholes, hems, and edge finishes where fabric is folded back on itself or sewn as a reinforcing layer.
The most straightforward application is the self-bound edge: a hem or facing cut from the garment fabric itself, often on a bias grain to allow stretch and prevent puckering. Bias-cut self-fabric strips are standard on knit garments and are easier to work with on curved seams than a woven tape. On structured garments like tailored jackets, self-fabric facings at the front opening and armhole give continuity of color and weight, reducing the visible machinery of construction.
Why self-fabric matters in production
Self-fabric eliminates the need to source, inventory, and handle a second textile. This cuts material waste by allowing the cutter to trim facing strips from selvage waste or cutaway sections. It also guarantees color match: no dye-lot variation between garment and trim. The downside is that self-fabric facings add bulk where edges are folded, and a thin fabric used as self-facing will not hold a sharp crease the way a stiffer interfacing would. On lightweight silks or linens, a self-facing may wilt or fray more readily than a woven tape.
Pattern markers must account for self-fabric strips when laying up. A garment designed for self-fabric cuffs requires extra yardage on the sleeves, and the cutter must plan to harvest facing stock without compromising the main panels. Factories often use bias bars or folder attachments on sewing machines to fold and press self-fabric edges cleanly before topstitching them in place.
The term also applies to interlining. A self-backed interfacing is a piece of fusible or sew-in interlining bonded or adhered to a layer of the garment fabric itself, rather than applied separately. This approach is common in collar-stand construction and in sewn-in interfacings for lighter-weight tailoring, where a separate interlining layer would create undue thickness or show at the edge.
