A paver is a self-propelled machine that deposits, spreads, and compacts hot asphalt mix onto a prepared road surface. It moves forward under its own power, typically at 5 to 15 feet per minute, laying a continuous ribbon of material to a specified width and thickness. The machine sits between the asphalt truck and the rollers that follow behind, bridging the gap between bulk delivery and final compaction.
The heart of a paver is its screed, a metal plate or frame that sits at the rear and strikes off excess asphalt to the target elevation. The screed is heated electrically or by a burner to prevent the material from sticking and cooling too fast. Most modern pavers have adjustable screeds that can be tilted to create crowned surfaces (higher in the center for drainage) or superelevated curves on banked roads. Augers beneath the hopper feed material from side to side, ensuring even distribution across the full width before the screed levels it.
Pavers come in three main categories by size. Wheeled machines typically handle lane widths from 6 to 16 feet and are used on highways and major roads; tracked machines offer better traction on soft subgrades and slopes; and small walk-behind or tow-behind pavers, sometimes called mini pavers, work on driveways, parking lots, and maintenance patches. Width and thickness are adjustable. Standard highway work might be 10 to 12 inches thick for base courses and 1.5 to 2 inches for wearing courses, but pavers can lay material anywhere from three-quarters of an inch to several inches deep.
Common problems and their causes
Poor screed temperature leads to paving failure. If the asphalt cools below 250 degrees Fahrenheit before compaction, it becomes stiff and difficult to roll, creating a rough, porous surface prone to cracking. Inconsistent hopper feeding causes ripples and waves in the finished surface. Operator error, including pavement being too steep for the machine's traction system or the paver moving too quickly relative to truck delivery rates, also creates quality issues. The screeds themselves wear down over years of use, and replacement or resurfacing is a regular maintenance cost.
The term 'paver' is sometimes used loosely to mean any road-laying equipment, but in trade usage it specifically means the screed machine itself, distinct from the truck delivering asphalt and the rollers compacting it behind. A paver operator requires skill to manage slope, speed, and screed temperature simultaneously. On large projects, multiple pavers may work in tandem to cover width, and their lateral alignment must be precise to avoid visible seams in the finished pavement.
