A double lock standing seam is a metal roof or wall panel joint where two vertical legs interlock with a double fold rather than a single fold. The first panel's standing seam (typically 1.5 inches tall) is folded over the adjacent panel's seam, then the second panel's leg is folded back over the first, creating two nested bends that grip each other. This geometry is stronger and more weathertight than a single lock seam and is the industry standard for high-performance metal panel systems in North America.

The double lock typically requires a dedicated seaming tool, either a manual or powered machine that creases the metal progressively. Manual tools are handheld devices that walk along the seam, making multiple passes to complete the lock. Powered versions use motorized rollers to compress and fold the metal in one or two passes, working much faster on large roofs. The seams are usually formed after panels are laid and clipped or fastened at the base.

Variants and Materials

Double lock seams are commonly formed in 24, 22, and 20 gauge steel or aluminum, with thicker gauges used in high-wind regions or commercial buildings. Standing seam metal roofs may have the seams on 12 to 24 inch centers. Some manufacturers offer factory-formed panels with the first leg of the lock already pressed, requiring only the field seaming tool to complete the second lock. This reduces installation time and improves consistency compared to forming both legs in the field.

The double lock resists oil canning (visible waviness in flat panel surfaces) better than single seam designs because the dual fold stiffens the panel edge. It also handles thermal movement more reliably, since the interlocking geometry accommodates expansion and contraction without the panels separating or the seam opening. In coastal or corrosive environments, the seam must still be sealed with compatible sealant at penetrations and edges, but the mechanical lock alone provides water resistance on the flat roof.

Failure modes include incomplete locks that do not fully compress the metal (leaving gaps), seam splits if a panel is overtightened or moves excessively, and corrosion of uncoated or damaged seams. Quality control relies on visual inspection of lock tightness and sometimes destructive testing of sample seams pulled perpendicular to their direction. The double lock standing seam remains the preferred choice for residential and commercial metal roofing because it is faster to install than riveted or welded alternatives, requires no added fasteners in the seam itself, and performs reliably across diverse climates.
