PCV: breathing room for your engine's crankcase

A positive crankcase ventilation system routes blow-by gases, unburned fuel and combustion products that leak past the piston rings, back into the intake manifold instead of venting them to the atmosphere. Without it, pressure builds in the crankcase, forcing oil past seals and gaskets and contaminating the engine oil with fuel and acid.

The PCV valve itself is a one-way check valve, typically a spring-loaded plunger housed in a plastic or metal body. During high engine load or high manifold vacuum, the valve opens fully to allow maximum flow of blow-by into the intake. At idle or under light load, when intake vacuum is stronger, the valve restricts flow to prevent too much unburned mixture from entering the cylinder. This metering action is critical: too much blow-by gas leans out the fuel mixture and causes rough idle; too little and pressure rises in the crankcase again.

PCV systems became mandatory on passenger cars in the United States starting in 1963 as an emissions control measure. The blow-by that would otherwise escape to air now burns in the cylinders. A typical system includes the valve, a hose from the crankcase to the intake manifold, and often a separator or catch can to prevent liquid oil from being drawn into the engine.

Common failure modes and maintenance

PCV valves clog with carbon sludge and oil residue, especially in engines that run short trips without reaching full operating temperature or in vehicles driven hard without regular oil changes. A stuck valve causes excessive crankcase pressure, oil leaks from the pan, valve cover, and rear main seal, and fouled plugs. A valve stuck open allows too much blow-by into the cylinder, causing a rough idle and lean misfire. Replacement is straightforward, unclip or unscrew the valve from its grommet or housing, pull the hoses, and install a new unit.

The PCV system is overlooked in routine maintenance but essential for engine longevity. Blocked PCV lines or a faulty valve will eventually damage seals, ruin oil quality, and increase crankcase pressure to levels that force oil past every seal on the engine. Many mechanics check the valve as part of a tune-up or when diagnosing oil leaks or hard starts.
