In automotive safety, to submarine means to slip forward underneath a lap or three-point seatbelt during a collision or hard braking event. The occupant's torso moves downward relative to the belt, which catches across the pelvis rather than the lower abdomen, allowing the legs and lower body to slide beneath it. The result is often severe internal injuries to the bowel, bladder, and intestines, along with crushing of the pelvis itself.
Submarining occurs most often when the seat belt geometry is poor, the seat itself is too soft or reclines too far back, or when a passenger is positioned too low in the seat to begin with. Taller occupants and those sitting in deeply reclined positions are at higher risk. The phenomenon became a major focus of safety engineering after high-speed crash test data in the 1960s and 1970s revealed the pattern of injuries that resulted when belts rode up over the hipbones instead of anchoring across them.
Prevention and design response
Modern vehicles address submarining through several mechanisms: seat belt pretensioners that tighten the lap portion of the belt during a crash to hold the occupant back into the seat, seat designs with firmer cushioning and geometry that prevents excessive reclining, and lower anchorage points (called LATCH in North America) positioned to control the angle at which the belt crosses the pelvis. Airbags also play a role by slowing occupant motion early in the collision sequence.
The term submarines, borrowed from naval terminology, refers to the sinking motion of the occupant downward through the belt rather than the belt containing them. It remains one of the primary failure modes that automotive engineers must design against, especially in rear-seat positions where passengers may sit in postures less aligned with belt protection.
