The petrol cap is a threaded or bayonet-mounted closure that seals the fuel tank filler neck on a vehicle. Its primary job is to prevent fuel loss, dirt ingress, and vapour escape from the tank during normal operation and storage. Most modern caps also incorporate a one-way pressure relief valve, which allows excess vapour pressure to vent safely without opening the cap itself.
Petrol caps vary in mechanism and material. Older vehicles often have simple screw caps made from plastic or metal; newer ones frequently use quarter-turn bayonet fittings that lock with a quarter rotation, or push-release designs that disengage with a button. High-end and performance vehicles may have locking caps that require a key, both to prevent fuel theft and to maintain security on the vehicle. The cap's gasket, usually nitrile rubber or EPDM, creates an airtight seal; degraded or missing gaskets are a common cause of fuel odour and vapour loss.
The cap must withstand fuel chemistry, temperature cycling, and mechanical vibration without cracking or loosening. Fuel tank pressures in modern vehicles range from about 6 to 10 kPa, so the relief valve is calibrated to release at specific thresholds; if it sticks or fails, tank overpressure can rupture seals elsewhere. Regulatory standards specify minimum sealing performance and flame arrestor design in some jurisdictions, particularly for vehicles sold in North America and the EU.
A loose, missing, or damaged petrol cap is one of the most frequent causes of diagnostic trouble codes related to the fuel system. Modern vehicles with onboard diagnostics monitor fuel tank integrity; a bad seal triggers a Check Engine lamp. Technicians routinely replace caps as a first diagnostic step when fuel odour or emission codes appear. Replacement caps are inexpensive and widely available, though OEM caps are preferable because aftermarket units sometimes fit poorly or lack proper pressure relief characteristics.
