petrography

The branch of petrology that deals with the scientific description and classification of rocks.

Petrography is the systematic examination and description of rocks in hand sample and thin section, using optical microscopes and sometimes electron microscopes. A petrographer looks at mineral composition, grain size, texture, and crystal relationships to determine what a rock is, where it came from, and what happened to it. This is foundational work in mining: you cannot evaluate an ore body, plan a quarry, or understand a deposit's geometry without knowing what you are actually looking at.

The core tool is the polarizing light microscope and a prepared thin section, a sliver of rock roughly 0.03 mm thick, mounted on a glass slide and polished smooth. Under crossed polars, minerals show characteristic colors, birefringence patterns, and extinction angles that act as fingerprints. A petrographer counts mineral percentages, measures grain diameters, and notes textures such as porphyritic (large crystals in a fine matrix), vesicular (full of holes from gas), or foliated (striped from pressure). This descriptive work feeds into mineral processing decisions: friability, density, and hardness depend on mineralogy and grain bonds.

Where petrography meets the mine floor

In hard rock mining, petrographers classify ores by their modal mineral content, alteration assemblages, and microfracture patterns. An iron ore might be magnetite, hematite, or goethite; the mineralogy determines beneficiation route and final product grade. In diamond exploration, petrography of kimberlite or lamproite samples (including heavy minerals recovered from stream sediment) reveals indicator minerals like pyrope garnet or ilmenite, signaling proximity to a pipe. Ore grade estimation and mine planning both depend on petrographic logging of drill core.

Petrography is also the language of quality control. Aggregate producers use petrographic examination to detect deleterious minerals, alkali reactivity, and weathering susceptibility; concrete durability hinges partly on the soundness of the stones in it. Dimension stone suppliers check for fracture patterns and discoloration that will affect dressed block yield. A petrographic report on material from a new pit sector can shift mining geometry or haulage strategy.

The term itself derives from Greek petros (rock) and graphia (writing or description). Petrography is descriptive; its cousin petrology is the broader science of rock origin and change. A petrographer is answering the question: what mineral phases are present, in what proportions, and in what textural relationship? A petrologist may then ask: under what temperature, pressure, and chemical conditions did this assemblage form? In industry, the petrographer's work is the platform on which all downstream decisions rest.
