photo machine: the bridge between paste-up and film
A photo machine is a phototypesetter, an electromechanical device that converts typed or digitally stored text into film or photographic paper, producing camera-ready output for offset printing plates. It sits between the compositor's keyboard and the darkroom, automating what was once done by hand with metal type and light tables. The machine projects characters onto light-sensitive film at high speed, building up complete pages or columns of justified text without the need for physical metal sorts.
Most photo machines work by rotating a character wheel or disc that holds all letters, numbers, and symbols in a single font and size. A strobe flash fires through the selected character, projecting it onto film moving past the lens at precisely timed intervals. The operator keys in text using a dedicated keyboard, often working from handwritten copy or manuscript. Speeds ranged from around 600 to 8,000 characters per minute depending on the model and whether hyphenation and justification were being calculated in real time or had been predetermined.
The output is continuous film or bromide paper, which must be developed, dried, and cut up by hand into strips or pages before assembly. Halftone images and line artwork require separate film generation on a scanner or drum imagesetters. This hybrid workflow, combining photographic image-setting with paste-up and mechanical assembly, dominated printing from the 1960s through the 1980s before offset-direct computer-to-plate technology displaced it almost entirely.
Common failure points include worn character wheels that produce distorted or faint letters, shutter or strobe failures that leave gaps in output, and registration drift where successive passes of film misalign. Film speed, exposure time, and developer chemistry all had to be kept within tight tolerances. Operators needed training in both keyboard composition and darkroom practices.
The name reflects the machine's core action: it uses photography to compose type. Photo machines represented a genuine leap in speed and flexibility over foundry type and linecasting, but required substantial capital investment and ongoing skilled labor. They are now almost entirely obsolete in commercial printing, though some remain in archives or specialty shops handling niche work.
