To dye (a finished fabric) after it has been woven or knitted, but before it is cut and sewn into finished products like garments.

Piece-dyeing is the process of coloring fabric in its full, continuous form, after weaving or knitting is complete but before it is cut into pattern pieces for garment assembly. The fabric enters the dye house as a bolt or roll, typically wound on a beam, and passes through dyebaths where color is absorbed by the fibers. This timing sits between yarn-dyeing (color applied before textile formation) and garment-dyeing (color applied to finished sewn items).

The mechanics depend on the fabric type and scale. For woven goods, a beam-dyeing machine feeds the fabric under controlled tension through heated dye liquor, usually at temperatures between 60 and 98 degrees Celsius depending on fiber content. Knit fabrics often run through beck dyeing machines, which circulate fabric and dye together in a vessel, or through continuous range dyeing where fabric moves steadily through multiple stations. Pressure, pH, time, and temperature are all variables that must be held tight to avoid streaking, shade variation, or uneven uptake across the width.

Advantages and constraints

Piece-dyeing offers real gains: it allows mills to dye white or greige (undyed) fabric to order, reducing inventory risk and inventory carrying costs, and it is faster and uses less water per kilogram than garment-dyeing. A mill can hold undyed inventory and fulfill color requests in days. The downside is that large format dyeing can produce shade variation across the width or along the length if the machine is not properly calibrated or the fabric is fed unevenly. Certain fiber blends, especially polyester-cotton mixes, require careful temperature staging to avoid uneven dye absorption between fibers.

The term reflects its position in the production sequence: the fabric is treated as a single piece or bolt rather than as loose fibers (yarn-dye) or finished garments (garment-dye). In industrial settings, piece-dyed goods are often marked as PD on delivery tickets or dye lot cards to distinguish them from other dyeing methods in the supply chain.

Common problem areas include hard water minerals interfering with dye fixation, insufficient rinsing leaving excess dye that bleeds onto other fabrics downstream, and inadequate scouring of finishes before dyeing, which can trap undyed pockets. Quality control checks sample the fabric at intervals along the roll and measure color strength with a spectrophotometer against an agreed standard. Piece-dyed fabric is also more susceptible to pattern show-through if seaming or pressing operations are careless, since the color is uniform across the surface.
