pigtail: a short wire jumper that bridges a gap
A pigtail is a short length of electrical conductor, typically stranded wire of 6 to 36 inches, used to connect two fixed points that cannot be joined directly. In energy and utilities work, pigtails appear most often at terminal blocks, switchgear, and transformer connections where equipment layout or safety clearance prevents running main cable in a straight line. The wire is usually the same gauge as the circuit it serves, though pigtails in low-voltage control circuits may be lighter gauge.
Pigtails are twisted or sometimes braided to increase mechanical strength and reduce the chance of individual strands catching or fraying. In high-voltage installations, the twist also helps manage impedance and capacitive coupling. Where corrosion is a risk, pigtails are often tinned copper or stainless steel, particularly in coastal or chemical environments. The ends are typically soldered or crimped, never twisted and taped, because vibration or thermal cycling will loosen a twisted joint.
Common failure modes and applications
Pigtails fail when they are undersized for the current, causing overheating at the crimp or solder joint. They also fail under vibration if the crimp or solder is poor quality or if the wire is too stiff and cracks at the termination. In transformers and heavy switchgear, pigtails between the device and the busbar must be mechanically supported at regular intervals to prevent sagging and fatigue. Missing or loose support clamps are a frequent field defect.
The term comes from the resemblance of a short twisted wire to a pig's tail. It is informal but universal in the trade. Pigtails are distinct from jumpers or straps only in their use for bridging a spatial gap rather than paralleling conductors; the terminology overlaps in practice. In metering cabinets, control panels, and substation wiring, the ability to use a pigtail of the correct length and insulation rating is essential to safe, maintainable installation.
