pigtailed: a short lead soldered to a component

A pigtailed component has a short length of wire or cable permanently attached to it, usually by soldering or crimping. This wire serves as an extension or connection point for the component itself. The term comes from the coiled appearance of the wire bundle, resembling a pig's tail. In practice, a pigtailed resistor, diode, or capacitor arrives from the supplier with leads already attached, ready to be inserted into a breadboard, terminal block, or soldered directly to a PCB.

Pigtails are common in industrial applications because they simplify assembly and reduce the need for additional splicing or connector hardware. A pigtailed temperature sensor, for example, might have a 2-meter shielded cable terminated with a connector, allowing the sensor probe to mount in one location while the signal travels to a remote logger or PLC. Similarly, power supplies often come pigtailed with 18 AWG or 20 AWG stranded copper wire in standardized colors: red for positive, black for negative, and sometimes yellow or white for ground or signal return.

Variants and Materials

The wire gauge, length, and insulation material depend on the application. Low-voltage signal devices often use 28 AWG to 24 AWG stranded wire with PVC jackets. Higher-power circuits require heavier gauge: a 100 W resistor pigtail might be 12 AWG or 10 AWG. Industrial temperature sensors use twisted-pair or shielded twisted-pair cable to reduce noise, often with PTFE insulation for higher temperature ranges. Some pigtails terminate with ferrules or solder tabs; others simply strip and tin the exposed copper.

Pigtailed devices eliminate the crimp or solder joint between the component body and the lead wire, which is a common point of mechanical failure in harsh environments. However, the pigtail itself introduces a stress concentration at the solder joint where it leaves the device body. Repeated flexing or vibration can break this connection. Industrial practice often involves potting or strain-relieving the joint with epoxy or heat-shrink tubing to distribute mechanical load.

The alternative to pigtailed components is to receive bare components and attach your own leads or connectors in-house. This is slower but allows full control over wire type, length, and termination. Most manufacturers supply pigtailed versions for high-volume commodity applications like temperature sensors, pressure transducers, and industrial relays, where standardization saves assembly cost and lead time.
