A pill is a small, matted ball of fibers that forms on the surface of a fabric when loose fibers work free and tangle together during wear or processing. Pills are most visible on knitted textiles and low-twist woven fabrics, where fibers are held less securely and migrate to the surface more easily. They feel rough and ugly, making the garment look worn or cheap even when new, and they are one of the most common complaints from consumers about cheap knitwear.
The mechanism is straightforward: friction from abrasion causes surface fibers to break at the base and loop upward. These freed fibers entangle with other loose fibers nearby, forming a tight ball held to the fabric only by the remaining fiber stubs anchored in the weave or knit. On a single jersey knit, pills appear within days of wear; on a fleece or sweatshirt fabric, they form even faster because the napped surface is designed to release fibers. Pilled fabric looks dingy and unraveled, and no amount of washing restores it.
The severity of pilling depends on fiber type, yarn twist, and fabric construction. Long staple fibers like high-quality cotton and wool pill less because they are less likely to break during wear. Polyester and acrylic, by contrast, are prone to pilling because they are slippery and break cleanly at the fiber-to-fiber junctions. Tightly twisted yarns and high-density weaves resist pilling; loosely spun yarns in low-density knits are vulnerable. Blended fabrics often pill more than single-fiber textiles because fibers migrate at different rates.
Mills test for pilling resistance using standardized rub tests, usually the Martindale or Pilling Box method, which counts visible pills after a set number of abrasion cycles. A fabric rated high for pilling resistance can survive 10,000 cycles or more with minimal visible pills; a poor one shows heavy pilling at 1,000 cycles. Fabric finishes can reduce pilling: some mills apply resins or use singeing to burn loose fibers away before finishing, though this adds cost and can affect hand and drape.
The term pill comes from the sphere shape, which resembles a pharmaceutical tablet. In textiles, it is a fault, not a feature, and manufacturers list it as a defect in quality control. Consumer-facing marketing avoids the word entirely, instead using vague language like durability or wash-and-wear performance. A fabric prone to pilling will lose sales despite other virtues, so reducing pill tendency is a genuine design goal, not an afterthought.
