Pilling is the formation of small, tangled balls of fiber that cling to the surface of woven or knitted fabric. These balls, or pills, form when short fibers break free from yarns during wear or processing, then tangle together and mat into visible nubs. The condition is purely cosmetic, affecting appearance rather than structural integrity, but it damages perceived quality and shortens useful life in consumer textiles.

The tendency to pill depends on fiber type, yarn construction, and fabric weave. Synthetic fibers like polyester and acrylic pill more readily than natural fibers because their smooth surface causes broken fibers to roll into tight balls rather than shed cleanly. Short staple fibers, loose yarn twist, and loose weaves all increase pilling risk. Woven fabrics generally pill less than knits because knit loops expose fiber ends more readily to abrasion and mechanical action.

Where it happens and why

Pilling begins at the fabric surface during wear, washing, or tumble drying. Friction causes fibers to break at the root, and if they remain partially anchored in the yarn, mechanical agitation rolls them into balls. This happens most on garment areas subject to rubbing, such as underarm seams, inner thighs, and cuffs. Dryer lint and pilling are related: in both cases fibers are breaking free, but pilled fibers stay attached while lint fibers detach entirely.

Mills reduce pilling through fiber selection, tighter yarn twist, and closer weaves. Post-finishing treatments also help: shearing or singeing the fabric surface removes loose fiber ends before they can pill, while some softening finishes actually increase pilling risk. Performance fabrics marketed for durability often specify reduced pilling through construction rather than chemical treatment, making them more resistant through thousands of wear and wash cycles.

The severity of pilling is measured by standard visual assessment methods, typically grading fabrics on a scale from 5 (no pilling) to 1 (severe). This rating drives fabric selection in applications where durability matters: upholstery, workwear, and outdoor textiles carry higher pilling specifications than disposable or single-season goods. For manufacturers, pilling represents a balance between cost, fiber choice, and consumer expectation.
