A volume of rock or oil trapped or isolated between strata that have pinched it out.
pinch out: where rock layers squeeze a deposit to nothing
A pinch out occurs where a bed of rock, ore, or productive strata thins progressively and finally disappears as it extends laterally. The enclosing rock above and below converge, eliminating the target layer entirely. In coal mining, a seam may pinch out over a distance of tens or hundreds of meters, forcing miners to abandon workings in that direction. In oil and gas, a productive sandstone formation may pinch out into shale, ending the trap and with it the economic accumulation.
Pinch outs are identified through stratigraphic correlation across drill holes, core samples, and seismic sections. Geologists map the thickness of a bed at multiple locations; where thickness approaches zero, a pinch out is near. The rate of thinning varies: some pinch outs are gradual, with the bed thinning over a kilometer or more, while others are abrupt, occurring within tens of meters. The geometry matters greatly to mine planning and reserve estimation, since tonnage projections depend on knowing where the bed terminates.
Pinch outs result from original depositional patterns or from structural deformation. During sedimentation, a sand lens may have been laid down only across part of a basin, thinning to mud at its edges. Alternatively, folding, faulting, or erosion after deposition can reduce bed thickness or remove it entirely. In tilted strata, older beds erode away toward a valley and younger beds lap across them; the older bed pinches out upward into younger rock. In metamorphic terrain, bed thickness may be reduced by pressure solution or shearing.
The economic consequences are severe. An ore body that pinches out may no longer justify the cost of continued mining or drilling. Reserve calculations must account for pinch outs to avoid overestimating tonnage. In hydrocarbon exploration, drilling into or past a pinch out is a common dry hole risk. Conversely, recognizing and mapping pinch outs accurately can reveal the margin of a productive zone and guide placement of future wells or workings to maximize extraction within the remaining thick portion of the bed.
